Welp, there goes my PC
Sudden hardware failure has finally decimated me in a sudden turn of events I can't help but be super fucking upset about. It was such a random freak thing that I'm fairly certain that whatever higher deity or powerful witch I pissed off in a past life has come back to spite me in the worst way possible.
I was mainly reading a webcomic tonight to wind down from a tiresome day at work. Nothing out of the ordinary happened. I had dinner (sub sandwich), pet my cat a bunch, I was just chilling. Roomie was doing whatever he was doing on his PC across the room.
Then, suddenly our power cuts. Everything is dark and black. Five seconds later, everything suddenly powers back on...huh, that was super weird, we say and turn our computers back on. For some odd reason, Windows decided to force an update on us that we didn't consent to, as it repeatedly told us that it was "updating" (to be fair, a Windows Update icon was showing, I usually ignore those as long as possible) and then restarted itself. Took a LOT longer on my machine than it did his. So I log in to my computer again, everything's fine. I fire up my usual programs, and suddenly they just...
won't...
...load. It's like the WHOLE system is hanging. Everything is frozen, taunting me. And then I go, okay this is annoying, and try to CTRL+ALT+DEL. Worst decision of my life, apparently. It sits there for like ten minutes on a black screen, mouse icon spinning in that little blue circle, and then I get tired of seeing it and power my PC off again.
I turn it back on. It boots up, and boots into my motherboard's screen that just says in big letters "SMART Failure Predicted on [hard drive]. WARNING: Please back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent and cause unpredictable fail."
According to Reddit, I have to find a way to back up the whole hard drive and replace it. And if it's the "hard drive that my OS is on, I'm in trouble." So...I'm in trouble, because it IS the hard drive my OS is on.
I'm trying really hard not to be dramatic or panic, but I go on a mini vacation in 2 days, and I'm losing my mind. AI slop enthusiasts drove up the prices of literally everything for computer components, so I can't even afford a new computer replacement this year if I wanted to. It's an older computer, so I'm really trying not to have to replace it. But I don't have any utilities to back my things up!
What the HECK do I DO? All I wanted was to relax, and I feel like I'm being punished for wanting a break...
